Trichocereus pasacana

Trichocereus pasacana. Trichocereus pasacana are a massive tree like species that can grow up to 9m in height. The girth can be as much as 45cm near the base.

Trichocereus pasacana has 15-35 ribs covered in numerous dense white or yellow spines that can be up to 5cm long. Trichocereus pasacana produces big(12cm), hardy white day blooming flowers. These are followed by edible fruits known as "Pasacana".

Wide spread throughout the desolate high deserts of northern Argentina and southern Bolivia. Considered a "holy" cactus. Ashes of the fruits, seeds and flowers are known to be used in special "llipta" mixtures, lime preparations that are chewed with coca (Erythroxylum species) leaves to help activate their remarkable stimulating properties.

Trichocereus pasacana is often confused with T. terscheckii and natural hybrids do occur.
