Deforestation

Massive deforestation is ongoing in many countries, and is shaping the worlds climate and geography. Deforestation results from the ongoing removal of trees without sufficient reforestation. This results in a drastic decline in habitat and biodiversity and quality of life. As recently as 1960, Central America still had 4/5ths of its original forest. Now it has only 2/5ths.

About half of the planets mature tropical forests, between 750 to 800 million hectares of the original 1.5 to 1.6 billion hectares have been taken. It is in the world's great tropical rainforests where the destruction is most pronounced at the current time and where clearcutting is having an adverse effect on biodiversity.

Desertification More than 80 percent of the Earth’s natural forests already have been destroyed.
