Pachypodium lamerei is a species of Pachypodium. It is often marketed as the "Madagascar Palm" due to being a native of Southern
Madagascar. Not a true palm but a member of the Apocynaceae family that produces fragrant flowers similar to Plumeria or Frangipani.
Pachypodiums are great for beginers. Most Pachypodium are very easy to care for.
Requires little water, even less in the winter when it looses it leaves.
It has a thick, spiny gray trunk that will reach 15 feet in nature(houseplants are much smaller). When mature the trunks are visually very striking and they are encrusted with large thorns and the leaves are mostly just at the top of the plant.
Pachypodium lamerei needs full sun to light shade with warm temperatures. We use a potting mix consisting of 2 parts sand to 1 part peat moss to 1 part loam with small gravel added for increased drainage. Water sparingly and do not fertilize. Do not water in the winter months when there is no foliage. Repot the plant every 3 years; this is quite tricky given all the spines. The best way is to wrap several layers of newspaper around the trunk where it is to be handled.
