Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria and eukaryotic algae use the energy from sunlight to produce glucose(sugar). They use the sunlight and the green in their leaves to make sugars from carbon dioxide (they breathe it in through tiny holes in their leaves called stomata) and water. Oxygen is a waste product of photosynthesis that is released through their leaves into the environment.

In green algae and plants the pigment molecules that initially absorb the light energy are chlorophyll(absorbs red and blue lightwaves) and various carotenoids(a class of natural fat-soluble pigments found principally in plants). Photosynthesis primarily takes place in plant leaves, and little to none occurs in stems, etc. The overall chemical reaction involved in photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O (+ light energy) C6H12O6 + 6O2.

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is a series of enzyme-catalysed steps for the conversion of light energy into chemical energy by living organisms.
