Psychotria viridis (Chacruna) is an evergreen shrub or small tree that produces
small red fruit containing small brown seeds and long, narrow leaves with pointed tips. It is also a relative of the coffee plant.
Psychotria viridis is native to the
Amazonian lowlands
, but it is also cultivated throughout the tropical regions of both hemispheres.
Chacruna is the most common companion to Banisteriopsis Caapi to produce Ayahuasca (
Brought to the publics attention on Bruce Parry's excellent BBC program AMAZON
). Ayahuasca is a sacred medicine used for millennia in rituals in many cultures of the Amazon Basin.
Psychotria viridis plants require full sun to partial shade. A very rich and fertile free draining soil is best. Humidity of 50% or more is ideal and they should
be re-potted frequently.
