Salvia divinorum is a member of the sage genus and the Lamiaceae family (mint).
The genus name Salvia is derived from the Latin salvare, meaning “to heal” or “to save”.
The Latin name Salvia divinorum literally translates to “sage of the seers”.
Salvia divinorum is native to certain areas in the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Salvia divinorum has large green leaves, hollow square stems and white flowers with purple calyces.
The plant grows to well over a meter in height. Unlike other species of salvia, Salvia divinorum produces few seeds, and those seldom germinate.
